A new study of over-the-counter orlistat and weight loss pills in Canada by Canadian researchers has found the same thing happening in the United States.
The researchers found that the weight loss drug orlistat (Xenical, Alli, Alli-R) from Xenical is more effective in treating obesity than orlistat (Orlistat, Lopressor, Xenical). Orlistat, in particular, is less likely to cause weight loss than orlistat (Xenical).
The study, published in the May/June issue of the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, compared orlistat and placebo in over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription-strength versions of the drug.
In the two groups, people taking orlistat (Xenical, Alli) lost an average of 28% of their body weight over two months. Orlistat had the highest weight loss of all of the drugs studied, with orlistat losing its weight by about 70%.
The study was conducted in the province of Ontario.
"The results showed that the weight loss of Orlistat in people taking Xenical is more than that of orlistat," said lead author Michael T. Hoehn, MD, a professor of internal medicine at the University of Toronto and a professor of medicine at the University of Toronto College of Medicine.
But Dr. Hoehn said that the same study found that Orlistat and orlistat did not cause weight loss. So it's possible that Xenical and orlistat could be equally effective in treating weight loss. But if they were taken together, the drugs could be more effective for people who are overweight and obese, according to Dr. Hoehn.
"Orlistat has been used for decades as a weight loss drug," he said. "But when orlistat is taken together, people can lose about 10 pounds or less in the first year, versus 40 pounds or more in the first six months of the use of Xenical."
The authors of the new study, from the University of Toronto, and researchers at Toronto's University of Health Sciences and the University of Toronto, are working to determine the efficacy of orlistat and the drugs that are most effective in reducing body weight.
"Our findings provide support for our previous studies that showed that orlistat and Xenical are both more effective than orlistat in treating weight loss," said Dr. "We believe this new study supports that conclusion."
Orlistat, sold under the brand name Xenical, is the only drug approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat obesity in adults and adolescents ages 18 years and older. It is also the only weight loss drug approved by the FDA to treat obesity in adults.
For example, orlistat is available as capsules and liquid suspension that are taken by mouth. It is also available in a generic formulation that is sold under the brand name Xenical.
The drug, called liraglutide, is an FDA-approved medicine to help people with type 2 diabetes control blood sugar levels. In Canada, liraglutide can also be obtained under other brand names, including Zepbound, Glucetra and Nuvaring.
Orlistat, sold under the brand name Xenical, is only available in a generic formulation that is sold under the brand name Xenical.
Hoehn said that while Xenical and orlistat have similar efficacy and safety profiles, there are some differences in the use of these drugs. For instance, the most effective dose of orlistat is 120 mg daily, and the dosage for adults and adolescents is 120 mg per day, he said. For the adults, the dosage is 20 to 40 mg daily, and the dosage for the adolescents is 40 to 80 mg daily.

Tablets like (the brand name for Orlistat) work by reducing the amount of fat your body absorbs. Ordinarily, fats are broken down during the digestion process by enzymes called lipases. Xenical prevents these enzymes from working effectively, limiting how much fat your body is able to absorb. The remaining, undigested fat is then excreted.
In contrast to Xenical, weight loss injections (or pens) work by suppressing your appetite - particularly your appetite for fatty foods. Some weight loss injections also slow the digestion process down, making you feel fuller for longer. They’re simple to use - check out our for more information.

Ozempic, semaglutide and tirzepatide are gastrointestinal medications used to treat obesity. They work by reducing the amount of fat your body absorbs. These medications are taken orally and have been shown to be effective in reducing the risk of developing pancreatitis and gastroduodenal ulcers in well-controlled clinical studies. The risk of developing pancreatitis is higher for semaglutide as it requires less fat to absorb, and are well-tolerated in most patients. Tirzepatide is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), and is rapidly absorbed when taken with a meal. Most people taking these medications do not experience gastrointestinal side effects.
